Keys locked in the car at the Deep Cove trailhead?

The Deep Cove trailhead parking lot at the end of Panorama Drive is one of the most popular on the North Shore — and one of the spots where we get called for car lockouts more than you'd expect. Not because hikers are careless. It's because a good trail, a light daypack, and a jacket in the back seat is the exact recipe for leaving your keys on the centre console, visible through the window, completely out of reach.

First — do a quick check before you call

Deep Cove is remote enough that you want to be sure you actually need a locksmith before we drive out. Run through this quickly:

Try all four door handles. Modern vehicle systems occasionally show a fault where the remote unlocks one door but not all of them — passengers have walked away thinking the whole car locked while a rear door stayed open.
Check the trunk. Some cars leave the trunk unlatched even when the doors are secured, and many sedans have a rear-seat fold-through that lets you reach the cabin from the boot.
Look at your phone: if you have the manufacturer's app (MySubaru, BMW Connected, FordPass, Tesla, etc.) it may unlock your car remotely. This only works if you set up the app before the lockout and have a data connection — the Deep Cove parking area has variable cell coverage depending on your carrier, but the lot itself usually has enough signal for a data call.
Check whether anyone in your hiking group or waiting at the trailhead has a spare key for your vehicle at home and could arrange for someone to drive it out to you.

This is genuinely one of the better places on the North Shore to be stranded for 30 minutes. Deep Cove village is a short walk from the trailhead lot — Panorama Drive leads right in. Honey Doughnuts is worth the walk, and the benches overlooking Indian Arm are hard to complain about. After the lockout — don't let it happen twice

A trailhead lockout is almost always a habit problem. A few things that reliably prevent a repeat:

A carabiner clip on your pack's shoulder strap dedicated to your keys — clip in before you lock the car, clip out when you're back. It becomes automatic within a week.
Add the manufacturer's connected-car app before your next hike and test it at home. If it can unlock your car remotely, a future lockout becomes a 90-second problem instead of a 30-minute one.
If you've lost your keys rather than left them inside the car, that's a different situation — you'll need car key replacement, which we also do on the North Shore. A lost key with a transponder chip needs to be cut and programmed to your vehicle, and it's best done before you've exhausted the only copy.
